Research Program Attestation

This page explains what you are agreeing to when you opt in to the Evoca Labs Research Program. Please read it all the way through before checking the “I have read and agree” box in the admin portal. If anything is unclear, contact us first — our details are at the bottom of this page.

The Research Program is optional. Saying no, or changing your mind later, never affects the service you receive or what it costs.

What the Research Program is

Evoca is a voice assistant for people living with memory impairment and their families. The Research Program lets us study how that assistant is actually used so we can make it more helpful. It has two parts, and opting in covers both:

• Insights from your own data, over time. We look at a participant’s own recordings and transcripts across weeks and months to find patterns that can help that participant — for example, topics that come up often, times of day when conversations go well, or changes worth sharing with the family members or caregivers the participant has designated. To do this, we may compute scores, indicators, and other measures from the participant’s recordings and transcripts.
• General findings from combined, de-identified data. We remove names and other identifying details from participants’ data, combine it with data from other participants, and study the combined set to learn how voice AI can support older adults in general. We may publish what we learn in research reports.

What data is used

For participants only:

• Stored voice recordings, such as recorded stories;
• Stored transcripts of conversations with the assistant; and
• Stored notes.

Not used for research:

• Calendar details that come from a connected Google account. These are excluded in accordance with the Google API Services User Data Policy.
• Data belonging to anyone who has not opted in.

We do not use recordings to identify anyone by their voice, and we do not create voiceprints.

How we protect research data

• Before any data is combined with other participants’ data, we remove names and other details that could identify the participant.
• Research data stays within the same secure systems and service providers described in our Privacy Policy. Only people working for Evoca Labs — employees and contractors bound by written confidentiality obligations — may access it, and only as needed for the research described on this page.
• We may share de-identified research data with outside research partners, such as a university or clinical collaborator, under a written agreement that prohibits them from trying to re-identify anyone and from using the data for any other purpose. We never share identifiable research data — recordings, voices, names, or story details — with outside partners.
• Beyond that, research data is not shared with anyone else for any purpose.
• We do not sell research data, and we do not allow our service providers to use it to train their own AI models.

Who owns what

• Your data is yours. Recordings, transcripts, notes, and stories belong to the user. By opting in, you give Evoca Labs permission to use them for the Research Program as described on this page — you are not giving up ownership.
• You can see it or delete it at any time. A participant, or the person managing their account, can ask to see the recordings, transcripts, and notes we hold, or ask us to delete them. When we delete them, we also stop using them in research.
• Evoca’s analysis belongs to Evoca. The scores, indicators, measures, models, and findings that Evoca Labs creates from research data are Evoca Labs’ property. They are not part of the data a participant can take with them, and they stay with Evoca Labs after a participant withdraws or deletes their data. Anything we keep after a deletion request is de-identified — it does not contain the participant’s name, voice, or story details.

What we will never do

• Publish audio recordings, voices, names, or story details that could identify a participant;
• Share research data with advertisers;
• Use participation, or anything we learn from it, to change the service you receive or its price; or
• Use research findings to market to a participant or their family.

Withdrawing

A participant, or the person who opted in on their behalf, can withdraw at any time by unchecking the opt-in box in the admin portal or by contacting our privacy officer. After withdrawal, the participant’s data is no longer used in research. Withdrawing does not delete the data itself — the participant keeps using Evoca as before; to delete it, ask us as described under “Who owns what.” Findings we have already published in anonymized, general form cannot be recalled, but they do not identify anyone.

Who may opt in

The opt-in may be given:

• By the user themselves; or
• By a family member or caregiver managing the account on the user’s behalf, if that person has the authority to make this choice for the user — for example, as the user’s agent under a power of attorney, as their legal guardian, or with the user’s own agreement.

Your attestation

By checking the “I have read and agree” box in the admin portal, you are confirming that:

• You have read this page in full;
• You are the user, or you have the authority described above to make this choice on the user’s behalf;
• The name and relationship you entered are accurate;
• You understand that the participant’s recordings, transcripts, and notes will be used in the two ways described above;
• You understand that the participant keeps ownership of their data, and that the analyses Evoca Labs creates from it are Evoca Labs’ property; and
• You understand that participation is voluntary and can be withdrawn at any time.

What we record

When you opt in, we record the name of the person opting in, their relationship to the user, the date, and the version number of this page (shown at the top). This record is kept with the user’s profile so we can show, if asked, who agreed and to what.

Changes to this page

If we change this page in a way that expands how research data is used, we will notify participants and ask for a new attestation before the change applies to them. Clarifications that do not expand how data is used will be posted here with a new version number and effective date.
